Arthur Conan Doyle may have made London crime detection synonymous with one name, but historian ANGELA BUCKLEY and a VERY SPECIAL MYSTERY GUEST reveal the secrets and stories of the real-life Scotland Yard sleuths patrolling the city long before the age of Sherlock Holmes.
On 9 April 1842, a police officer crept into a stable yard in Wandsworth in the search for a thief, with only a lantern to light his way. Little did he know that he was about to make a gruesome discovery that would not only shock the nation, but lead to a groundbreaking development in the history of British policing.
Hidden amidst the hay, PC Gardiner came across the mutilated torso of a woman who had been murdered by her husband.
Victorian supersleuth ANGELA BUCKLEY goes on The Hunt for Daniel Good, the man responsible for the murder, and examines the clues and terrible events of one of London’s most significant historic murders. She will reveal how Good was eventually brought to justice and how, with other high-profile crimes, this led to the creation of Scotland Yard.
In August 1849, only seven years after their creation, Scotland Yard detectives tackled one of the most high-profile murders in Victorian history - ‘The Bermondsey Horror’ - the murder that inspired Charles Dickens. When the body of customs officer Patrick O’Connor was found under the slabs in the basement of a house in Bermondsey, the police knew that Frederick and Maria Manning were responsible for his murder, but the married couple had already fled the scene.
OUR VERY SPECIAL MYSTERY GUEST DETECTIVE explores early crime scene examination and the modus operandi of London’s detective department as they tracked the Mannings across the capital and as far as Scotland and Jersey.
