Actor and writer JULIE BALLOO dramatically evokes the life and strange death of WILLIAM TERRIS who was murdered at the stage door of the Adelphi on 16th December, 1897 and later became ‘The Covent garden Ghost’ (allegedly - Ed.).
A glamorous handsome hero, adored by his public, a devoted stay-at-home wife and lovely children, a beautiful secret mistress, a vicious deluded wannabee actor, the foggy streets of old London town... It has all the hallmarks of a Victorian melodrama doesn't it? In fact it is the story of the Victorian melodrama star WILLIAM TERRIS and his nemesis Richard Archer Prince, two men who could not have been more different, two men with polar opposite upbringings and from two very differing classes.Terris packed out theatres with thousands of fans desperate to catch a glimpse of a man with Hollywood looks before Hollywood existed. Prince was a man who was literally starving and eking out a grim existence in one room of a London boarding house.
In the first half of the evening, Julie Balloo will tell theatre of a crime shook London and had all the sensationalism of one of Terris’s own productions. In the second half she will be joined by actors Todd Boyce playing William Terriss and Rebecca Dunn playing Jessie Milward in a section of dramatized scenes in the play 'Gods of the Adelphi.' she has written about the event.
